Description

The Drain Flood Protector works like a check valve to seal off water back-up caused by overloaded sewers.  Water will flow normally through the drain until the sewer begins to back up. Then the Drain Flood Protector float rises to seal off the drain opening until the water recedes.  It only takes a screwdriver and a couple of minutes to install a Drain Flood Protector.  Once in place, it can prevent property damage and a very messy clean-up job. Gaskets are made of molded rubber, and all metal parts are plated or stainless steel.   For extreme, extended pressure (for instance, where homemade seals have popped out of line), we recommend our standpipe models.

How To Install a Drain Flood Protector

Basements are handy things: we use them for storage, as workshops, living spaces, and a setting for scary stories. Useful as they are, basements are also one of the most vulnerable spaces in your home when it comes to flooding. Though there are many potential causes, a common one is sewer water backing up out of the floor drain. These drains aren't only found in basements. Laundry rooms, garages and bathrooms may use floor drains as well, and any of them could act as a pathway for waste water being forced the wrong way through your home's drain pipes.

Among the most inexpensive, simple and effective ways to help prevent the harrowing saga that usually follows is to install a cleverly designed Drain Flood Protector. The simplicity of the Drain Flood Protector is attractive, but it's their ease of installation that makes them irresistible. The manufacturer states “a screwdriver and a couple of minutes are all you need”, and it's true!

Note about the 2" Flood Drain Protector:  These are not designed to be used directly in shower drains because it may not drain quick enough and could cause water to back up in your shower.  This may or may not present a problem.

 Float Model Drain Flood Protector

Essentially a check valve for your floor drain, the Drain Flood Protector float model features a rubber float that is pushed up into the drain opening when water begins to rise up from below, sealing off the drain and protecting your home from minor to moderate backup situations. Whenever water threatens from below, the float will seal off the entrance it seeks. Drain Flood Protector are designed to fit common 2", 3" or 4" drain sizes.

To install the Float Model, you may wish to slightly pre-tighten the screws on the Drain Flood Protector beforehand to expand the outer gasket. If your pipe has a slightly larger diameter, this will help the unit from falling too far down the pipe. You could also use a string, wire or hook to lower the Drain Flood Protector into place, or simply hold the float rod. Lower the Drain Flood Protector into the pipe, making sure that it's low enough with the float pushed up for the strainer/cover to fit back over the drain, flush with the floor.

Once the unit is down deep enough, tighten the screws at the top to create a snug seal within the pipe. Put a few drops or dabs worth of oil or grease on the float rod and the hole at the top of the unit. Replace the strainer/cover on the drain, and wash your hands. Periodically check to ensure the pin moves freely when the float is sealed.

**Note - if you don't get a snug fit, try adding this special rubber tape around the product.

The Drain Flood Protector is great for Commercial Drains or residential basement drains!

    WORKS AS ADVERTISED!

Posted by Nathan on 27th Apr 2020

Installed this in my old basement shower drain which would back up on occasion, mostly during heavy precipitation events. Have had it installed about 1 month now with no back up issues to date. While having 2 significant precipitation events since then. very pleased thus far!
