How to clean a Grease Trap

Cleaning a grease trap is an important maintenance task to prevent clogs, odors, and compliance issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to safely and effectively clean an indoor grease trap:

  1. Gather supplies: - You may need items such as rubber gloves, safety glasses, plastic scraper or scoop, a container for the grease, dish soap or degreaser, hot water, wire brush, and towels or rags.
  2. Turn Off Equipment: If the grease trap is connected to active kitchen appliances or plumbing, ensure everything is turned off to prevent flow into the trap.
  3. Remove the Lid - Loosen the bolts or clasps securing the lid. Gently lift the grease trap lid, being careful not to damage the lid or its gaskets.
  4. Measure Grease Build-Up - Use a ruler or measuring stick to check the depth of grease inside the trap, similar to checking oil levels in a car. Record the grease depth in a FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) report, as required by the EPA.
  5. Remove the Grease - Scoop out the grease using a bucket, shovel, or other sturdy tool. Be sure to clean all grease residue from the bottom, sides, and lid of the trap to prevent future buildup.
  6. Remove the Water - Use a bucket or small pump to remove the water from the trap. Set the water aside to return it later during the cleaning process.
  7. Thoroughly Clean and Scrub the Interior - Scrub the interior surfaces, including the top, sides, and bottom of the trap, as well as the screens. Use a commercial drain cleaner for tough residues to achieve a spotless result. Rinse Thoroughly with hot water.
  8. Replace the Water - Pour the saved water from Step 6 back into the grease trap.
  9. Inspect and Reassemble the Trap - Check for wear or damage to parts like the gasket or baffles. Reinstall all components securely and fasten the lid tightly to complete the process.
  10. Dispose of Waste Properly - Dispose of grease and solids per local waste management guidelines. Do not dump grease down the drain—it can clog pipes and cause environmental damage
