Rooftop Grease Overload - How to stop it!
This month’s case study comes to us from a company out of Texas. Check out how messy this roof was before one of our Rooftop Grease Containment products saved the day! To help you distinguish what is in the photograph below, we have circled and labeled some distinct parts.
As I’m sure you can surmise, this is a disaster. Not only does it break a ton of NFPA 96 regulations, but it is also wholly unsafe for anyone to be around. In terms of safety, the NFPA 96 states, “11.4 – Inspection for Grease Buildup. The entire exhaust system shall be inspected for grease buildup by a properly trained, qualified, and certified company or person(s) acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.” However, in a case such as this, the rooftop isn’t even accessible for safe cleanup.
The NFPA 96 continues with, “11.6.1 – Upon inspection, if the exhaust system is found to be contaminated with deposits from grease-laden vapors, the contaminated portions of the exhaust system shall be cleaned by a properly trained, qualified, and certified company or person(s) acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.” As we can tell from the above picture, this rooftop has not been cleaned for a while.
This rooftop directly violates, “11.6.2 – Hoods, grease removal devices, fans, ducts, and other appurtenances shall be cleaned to remove combustible contaminants prior to surfaces becoming heavily contaminated with grease or oily sludge.”
Since there is a small amount of space on this rooftop for a large grease containment system, the company decided to use the Grease Box Xtreme. The Grease Box Xtreme consists of three trays, each containing an absorbent filter placed in a vertical stack for maximum absorbency. Our filters were specially designed to be hydrophobic which means that they only capture grease and allow rainwater to pass through.
Because this grease containment system had a spout and was only producing grease from one side instead of leaking out of all sides, the Grease Box Xtreme is more economical than the SRS Interceptor, Roof Guardian, or Hi-Cap.
We will work with you to find the perfect solution for every client. We have several solutions for any rooftop grease containment issue, and if we don’t have it, then we invent it! We are here to help all our clients and distributors find the perfect solution to keep their rooftop clean, safe, and compliant.
